Musician & Music Industry Professional

Age is a complicated topic for me – there are layers, and differences between my experiences as a musician and music industry professional. Earlier in my career I have definitely experienced not being taken seriously, which I think is a combination of age and gender discrimination as men my age did not appear to have this issue. As I’m now in my mid-thirties it is also very apparent to me that at a structural level this industry is not working for women who become parents, and that pressures around this age group and decisions on whether to pursue having a family can create additional stress. There are aspects of being a gigging musician that still feel like it’s set up as if I’m in my early 20s – going on tour, sharing rooms, a very DIY lifestyle – but I am trying to explore how to not compromise the basics as sleep and comfort mean too much to me now.

On the other hand, with getting older I have also become more confident to push back, fight for my rights and stand up for others. It is something I have looked forward to, and continue to look forward to, as I get closer to my 40s and see lots of women who are not willing to put up with things the way we do when we are younger. I do sometimes still feel like I’m perceived as being young – but only by people who are much older, and I’m enjoying being able to offer those younger than me support and advice at this stage in my life and career.
